The Bogalusa Heart Study has followed an ethnically diverse of children in northern Louisiana for over 40 years, and this report tells us that the presence of insulin resistance, not just being overweight or obese, predicts future metabolic syndrome and diabetes risk. This suggests a benefit of encouraging fitness in children, since fitness is probably the most significant modifiable factor for improving insulin resistance. See article
