Involving people in their own care is the key to success when treating chronic diseases such as diabetes. This process is driven by information access and communication between people and their healthcare providers. The internet, including social media, can be an important factor in information access, and providers need to welcome the opportunities that this brings when they are meeting with patients. This report released today reviews recent studies in this area, and points out that both patients and doctors reported greater satisfaction when online health information was discussed during the appointment. This rising interest in online information also gives providers an opportunity to suggest or guide patients to the most appropriate sites.
